Plastics are an important class of materials that shape our everyday
life so much, in particular as textiles, packaging or other disposable
materials. They are cheap, light weight and flexible. And it is, among
others, these features that make them very attractive for electronic
applications as well. However, in order to be suitable for this field,
they have to be made electrically conductive and they have to interact
with light in the visible spectral range – i.e. they need to have the
basic features of semiconductors.
This lecture will give an introduction into the scientific background of
organic semiconductors and the newly emerging field of plastic
electronics. Their strong relevance for applications has recently found
its manifestation in commercial products like smartphones or television
screens based on organic light-emitting diodes as well as building-
integrated photovoltaic modules based on organic solar cells.
